Driving around gives you more flexibility, but bear in mind gas is very expensive in Greece. However, you have the option to ride buses, which are present almost everywhere except in the small towns. Most conductors and drivers understand quite enough English so communicating your destination shouldn't be a big problem.
Off peak season in Greece is from November to April. Although the weather is wonderful throughout the year, the best time to visit and get great deals on airfare, hotels, and cruises is during shoulder or off peak season.
